My fish, Garcin, has warmed up to me. He no longer gets afraid when I come close to feed him, now he swims to the surface and anxiously awaits the food I sprinkle in. It makes me think about how it takes time to be comfortable with people (or fish). Perhaps trust is just a matter of logic and probability. You spend enough time with someone, in the same situation, and at some point you reason out that if they were going to do something to hurt you, they would have already done it. So you trust them. But if you switch up the situation, the clock starts over again. Time doesn't always warrant trust, but I think we use that equation most often.
